Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 is required for many chemical reactions in the body including providing the co-factor known as NADH+ for the conversion of ADP into ATP which is the body’s main source of energy.
Niacin is often included in post-workout supplements as it is able to improve the rate of recovery by reducing inflammation and increasing muscular efficiency.
Niacin is able to increase the efficiency of skeletal muscle by potentially inhibiting the obesity induced switch of muscle fibers from oxidative type 1 to glycolytic type 2. Niacin activates key regulators of fiber transition such as the enzymes PGC-1 alpha and PGC-1 beta.
Niacin is also known for its ability to increase mitochondrial fatty acid burning and oxidative phosphorylation, which is one of the body’s main energy systems. Not only does niacin keep a body feeling revived and keep muscles working efficiently following a workout but it also reduces the inflammation that often goes hand in hand with a hard workout.
Inflammation of adipose tissue has been found to be significantly reduced following the ingestion of niacin. Niacin supplementation results in the inhibition of a pro-inflammatory protein known as M1 macrophage marker CD11c. It has been confirmed that these anti-inflammatory effects are executed in a niacin receptor dependent manner and not due to any other physiological action from other enzymes. This is why niacin is a common constituent of post-work out formulas.
